1Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered together, so much that they trampled on one another, he began to say to his disciples first of all, "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. 3Therefore, whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops. 4"I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5But I will warn you whom you should fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into Gehenna. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6Are not five sparrows sold for two assaria coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows. 8"I tell you, everyone who confesses me before men, the Son of Man will also confess before the angels of God; 9but he who denies me in the presence of men will be utterly denied in the presence of the angels of God. 10And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him, but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit it will not be forgiven. 11And when they bring you before the synagogues, and the rulers, and the authorities, do not be anxious how or what you will answer, or what you will say; 12for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you must say." 13Someone out of the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." 14But he said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?" 15And he said to them, "Look, and keep yourselves from all covetousness, for a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." 16He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man produced abundantly. 17And he reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I do not have room to store my crops?' 18And he said, 'This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will gather all my grain and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."' 20But God said to him, 'Fool, this night your soul is required of you; and the things which you have prepared, whose will they be?' 21So is he who treasures up for himself, and is not rich toward God." 22And he said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious for your life, what you will eat, nor yet for your body, what you will wear. 23For life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24Consider the ravens: they do not sow, neither do they reap, they have no storehouse or barn, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than the birds! 25And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his lifespan? 26If then you are not able to do even the least thing, why are you anxious about the rest? 27Consider the lilies, how they grow: they do not toil, neither do they spin; yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like one of these. 28But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, you of little faith? 29And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not be anxious. 30For all the nations of the world seek after these things, but your Father knows that you have need of these things. 31But seek his kingdom, and all these things will be added to you. 32Do not fear, little flock, for it has pleased your Father to give you the kingdom. 33Sell your possessions and give to the needy; make for yourselves purses that do not grow old, an unfailing treasure in the heavens, where no thief approaches, and no moth destroys. 34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 35"Let your waists be girded, and your lamps burning; 36and be like men waiting for their own lord when he returns from the wedding feast, so that when he comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately. 37Blessed are those servants, whom the lord will find watching when he comes; truly I tell you, that he will gird himself, and make them recline at the table, and he will come and serve them. 38And if he comes in the second watch, or comes in the third watch, and finds them so, blessed are those servants. 39But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 40Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you do not expect." 41Peter said to him, "Lord, are you speaking this parable to us, or also to all?" 42And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and prudent manager, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season? 43Blessed is that servant, whom his lord will find doing so when he comes. 44Truly I tell you that he will set him over all that he has. 45But if that servant says in his heart, 'My lord delays his coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and to drink and to get drunk, 46the lord of that servant will come on a day when he is not expecting him, and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in two, and will assign him his portion with the unbelievers. 47And that servant, who knew his lord's will, and did not prepare, nor do according to his will, will be beaten with many stripes; 48but he who did not know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. For to everyone to whom much is given, much will be required from him; and to whom much was entrusted, from him they will ask even more. 49"I came to cast fire upon the earth; and what do I desire, if it is already kindled? 50But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! 51Do you think that I came to give peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. 52For from now on there will be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53They will be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." 54And he said also to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising from the west, immediately you say, 'A shower is coming,' and so it happens. 55And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat,' and it happens. 56You hypocrites! You know how to discern the appearance of the earth and the sky; but how is it that you do not discern this time? 57And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? 58For as you are going with your adversary before the magistrate, make an effort on the way to be released from him; lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59I tell you, you will by no means get out of there until you have paid the very last penny."

Several traditions agree that Christ's casting of fire upon the earth represents the purifying and illuminating presence of the Holy Spirit, and that His warning of division establishes how faithful confession of the gospel will inevitably rupture human relationships. Some traditions also emphasize that the numbering of hairs demonstrates God's meticulous providence, that the promised Holy Spirit provides spontaneous inspiration during trials, and that degrees of divine judgment are strictly… サインインして共通理解の全文を読む →

Catholic

In Luke 12, Jesus addresses both His disciples and a massive crowd, delivering a series of urgent eschatological and ethical warnings. The chapter weaves together exhortations to fearless confession of faith, warnings against hypocrisy and covetousness (illustrated by the Parable of the Rich Fool), and commands to trust in divine providence rather than earthly wealth. The discourse shifts into a call for intense vigilance, using the imagery of servants waiting for their master's return. Jesus reveals that His mission brings crisis, a 'baptism' of suffering, and a dividing 'fire' upon the earth, concluding with an urgent appeal to interpret the times and settle accounts with God before facing ultimate judgment. Reception: The Catholic tradition, drawing from both Latin and Eastern sources, reads this chapter as a major locus for several key doctrines. The warning about the 'blasphemy against the Holy Spirit' (v. 10) is understood not as a careless word, but as final impenitence—the deliberate refusal of God's saving mercy to the very end, as articulated by Thomas Aquinas. The distinction between the servant who knew his master's will and the one who did not, receiving 'many' or 'few' stripes (vv. 47-48), serves as a foundational scriptural warrant for Catholic moral theology regarding degrees of culpability, distinguishing between mortal and venial sin based on knowledge and consent (Augustine). The 'fire' Jesus casts on the earth (v. 49) is widely interpreted by Greek Fathers like Cyril of Alexandria as the illuminating and kindling power of the Holy Spirit, poured out to burn away sin and ignite charity. Furthermore, the concluding imagery of being cast into prison until the 'last mite' is paid (vv. 58-59) is a classical text used by Latin commentators, notably Bede the Venerable, to support the doctrine of Purgatory, indicating a state of temporary, post-mortem purification for those who die in grace but require cleansing before entering heavenly glory.

Eastern Orthodox

In a densely packed setting, Jesus shifts between addressing his disciples and the wider multitude, delivering teachings on hypocrisy, true security, and eschatological readiness. The chapter weaves together exhortations against the fear of human persecutors, warnings against greed (illustrated by the Parable of the Rich Fool), teachings on trusting divine providence over anxiety, and urgent commands to remain watchful for the sudden coming of the Son of Man. Jesus concludes by defining his mission as bringing a divisive fire to the earth and urging the crowds to discern the times. Reception: Eastern Orthodox reception of Luke 12 is deeply shaped by patristic asceticism, particularly concerning wealth and inner vigilance. Saint Basil the Great's exegesis of the Parable of the Rich Fool (verses 16-21) forms the backbone of Orthodox social ethics; Basil argues that the rich man's core sin is his delusion of absolute ownership over resources that God entrusted to him for the benefit of the poor. The command to 'let your loins be girded' (verse 35) is foundational for the Orthodox ascetic concept of nepsis (watchfulness). Saint Cyril of Alexandria interprets this girding as maintaining spiritual purity and active readiness for Christ's return, while he understands the unforgivable blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (verse 10) not as a spoken slip, but as a hardened, persistent state of unrepentance against evident divine grace. Furthermore, the 'fire' Christ casts on the earth (verse 49) is frequently interpreted in the Philokalic tradition. Pseudo-Macarius identifies this fire as the uncreated, purifying grace of the Holy Spirit which inflames and cleanses the soul.

Oriental Orthodox

In Luke 12, Jesus addresses massive crowds and His disciples, delivering a wide-ranging discourse on hypocrisy, fear, providence, and vigilance. He warns against the 'leaven of the Pharisees' and instructs His followers to fear God, who holds eternal authority, rather than human persecutors who can only kill the body. Following a request to settle a family inheritance dispute, Jesus tells the Parable of the Rich Fool to critique covetousness and false security in wealth. Shifting focus, He points to the ravens and lilies as evidence of divine providence, urging disciples to seek the kingdom of God rather than harboring anxieties about material needs. The discourse then assumes a highly eschatological tone, demanding that believers remain as vigilant servants with their lamps burning, ready for the master's unpredictable return. Finally, Jesus speaks of a divisive 'fire' and 'baptism' that He brings, rebuking the crowds for failing to interpret the critical nature of the present time. Reception: Oriental Orthodox reception of this chapter relies heavily on the exegetical legacy of Cyril of Alexandria, whose extensive commentary on the Gospel of Luke was preserved primarily in the Syriac tradition. Reading the text through a miaphysite Christological lens, Cyril interprets Christ's declaration, 'I have a baptism to be baptized with' (verse 50), as referring to His voluntary suffering and death. For the tradition, this highlights the unity of the incarnate Word, who willingly subjects His flesh to the passion for the salvation of the world. Furthermore, Cyril identifies the 'fire' cast upon the earth (verse 49) as the purifying and illuminating power of the Holy Spirit, which burns away sin and kindles divine love. The chapter’s strong warnings against hoarding wealth (verses 16-21) and the command to sell possessions (verse 33) were received by early Coptic, Syriac, and Ethiopian ascetics not merely as ethical advice, but as foundational, literal mandates for monastic renunciation and detachment from the world.

1In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. 3Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. 4And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. 6Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. 8Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: 9But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. 10And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. 11And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: 12For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. 13And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 15And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. 16And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. 22And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. 23The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. 24Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? 25And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? 26If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? 27Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? 29And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. 31But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. 32Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. 34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 35Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; 36And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. 38And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. 40Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. 41Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all? 42And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? 43Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 44Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. 45But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; 46The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. 49I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? 50But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! 51Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 54And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. 55And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. 56Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? 57Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? 58When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. 59I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

Academic textual-historical analysis

In the narrative of Luke 12, Jesus addresses a massive, trampling crowd and his disciples, weaving together sapiential wisdom and eschatological warnings. The chapter moves through sequential topics: warning against Pharisaic hypocrisy and fear of human persecution; a refusal to arbitrate an inheritance dispute, leading to the parable of the Rich Fool who hoards wealth but loses his life; exhortations against anxiety regarding food and clothing, using ravens and lilies as examples of divine provision; and a sustained apocalyptic discourse demanding constant vigilance for the unpredictable return of the master or the Son of Man, ending with a stark declaration that Jesus brings household division and a demand to interpret the times.

Jewish interpretation

In its first-century context, this chapter presents a collection of teachings addressing eschatological urgency and the ethical demands placed upon a Jewish audience. The text emphasizes radical trust in divine providence, warns against the hoarding of material wealth, and anticipates the severe societal and familial upheaval traditionally associated with the arrival of the messianic age.

Latter-day Saint

Jesus delivers a series of teachings to a massive crowd and His disciples. He warns against the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, encourages His followers to fear God rather than mortals who can only kill the body, and promises the Holy Spirit's aid in times of persecution. Responding to a dispute over an inheritance, Jesus warns against covetousness via the parable of the rich fool. He commands His disciples not to worry about physical provisions but to trust in God's care, assuring the 'little flock' of the Father's good pleasure to give them the kingdom. He urges constant readiness for the return of the Son of Man. When Peter asks if the parable of the vigilant servants applies to the apostles or everyone, Jesus describes the faithful and wise steward, noting that greater knowledge brings greater accountability. Finally, He prophesies that His coming will bring division rather than peace, and He rebukes the crowd for failing to discern the times.

Jehovah's Witnesses

In this chapter, Jesus addresses a massive crowd, but directs his primary instruction to his disciples. He warns them against the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and urges them not to fear men who can only kill the body, but to fear God, who holds ultimate authority over life and death. After refusing to arbitrate a dispute over an inheritance, Jesus delivers the parable of the rich fool to warn against covetousness, emphasizing that true security comes from being 'rich toward God' rather than accumulating material wealth. He commands his followers not to be anxious about physical needs but to seek God's Kingdom first. Jesus then transitions to themes of watchfulness and readiness for the return of the Son of Man, contrasting the faithful steward who cares for the household with the unfaithful one who abuses his position. He concludes by declaring that his message will bring division rather than peace, even fracturing families, and he rebukes the crowds for failing to discern the critical nature of the times.
