1I solemnly charge you therefore before the God and the Lord, Christ Jesus, who is about to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2preach the word; be ready in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all patience and teaching. 3For there will be a season when they will not endure the sound teaching, but according to their own lusts, they will heap up for themselves teachers to tickle their hearing; 4and on the one hand they will turn away their hearing from the truth, and on the other hand they will be turned aside to fables. 5But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 6For I am already being poured out as an offering, and the season of my departure has come. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. 8From now on there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will repay to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all those who have loved his appearing. 9Be diligent to come to me quickly, 10for Demas forsook me, having loved the present age, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. 11Luke alone is with me. Take Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry. 12But Tychicus I sent to Ephesus. 13Bring the cloak that I left behind in Troas with Carpus when you come, and the books, especially the parchments. 14Alexander the coppersmith did me many evil things; the Lord will repay him according to his works. 15Whom you also must beware, for he greatly opposed our words. 16At my first defense no one came to my side, but all forsook me; may it not be counted against them. 17But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the proclamation might be fully assured, and all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of a lion. 18And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and will save me into his heavenly kingdom; to him be the glory for the ages of the ages. Amen. 19Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. 20Erastus remained in Corinth, but Trophimus I left behind in Miletus sick. 21Be diligent to come before winter. Eubulus greets you, as do Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brothers. 22The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Broadly, Christian traditions agree that Paul's warning against 'itching ears' describes the persistent human inclination to reject sound doctrine in favor of culturally accommodating or pragmatic teachings. Some traditions find specific historical and liturgical significance in the chapter's details, viewing Paul's description of being 'poured out' as a sacramental offering of martyrdom and identifying the mention of delegates like Linus as historical evidence for apostolic succession.… Ingia ili usome makubaliano kamili →

Catholic

In this concluding chapter of his second epistle to Timothy, Paul issues a solemn, apostolic charge before God to preach the word urgently and counter false teachings. Recognizing his impending execution, Paul adopts sacrificial language, describing himself as a libation being poured out. He reviews his apostolic career as a completed race for which a 'crown of righteousness' or justice is reserved by the Lord. The chapter concludes with practical instructions, requests for specific companions and items, notes of abandonment and divine deliverance, and final greetings to members of the Christian community, including figures in Rome. Reception: The Catholic tradition reads this chapter as foundational for doctrines of merit, martyrdom, apostolic succession, and liturgical theology. The 'crown of justice' (verse 8) is central to the Catholic understanding of merit. The Council of Trent (Decree on Justification) cites verse 8 to teach that eternal life is both a grace promised to the children of God and a reward for their good works. This is historically balanced by Augustine's principle, articulated in his correspondence, that when God crowns human merits, He is merely crowning His own gifts. Paul's description of being 'poured out' (verse 6) is read sacramentally; Thomas Aquinas identifies this libation with martyrdom as an acceptable sacrifice united to Christ's. Verse 21 holds unique historical weight for apostolic succession: Irenaeus identifies the Linus mentioned here as the immediate successor to Peter as the Bishop of Rome. Additionally, Eastern and Latin traditions both see a profound ecclesial reality in the final blessing. John Chrysostom argues that 'The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit' (verse 22) refers specifically to the indwelling grace of the Holy Spirit conferred upon the minister for his apostolic office.

Eastern Orthodox

In this final chapter of his epistles, Paul delivers a solemn, testamentary charge to Timothy in the presence of God and Christ. Anticipating his imminent execution, Paul instructs Timothy to maintain strict fidelity to the apostolic message, regardless of whether the times are favorable, warning that future generations will seek out teachers who cater to their own desires. Paul reflects on his completed apostolic mission using athletic and sacrificial metaphors, expresses confidence in his future heavenly reward, and provides practical closing instructions concerning his companions, his personal needs (a cloak, books), and warnings about specific opponents. Reception: The Eastern Orthodox tradition receives this chapter as a profound theology of martyrdom, ascetic endurance, and apostolic continuity. John Chrysostom's 'Homilies on 2 Timothy' form the backbone of the Byzantine reception of this text. Chrysostom gives special attention to verse 6, where Paul speaks of being 'poured out' (σπένδομαι); he interprets this as a liturgical act, likening Paul's impending martyrdom to a sacred libation and sacrifice that perfects his apostolic ministry. Similarly, the 'good fight' and the 'crown of righteousness' (vv. 7-8) are read as validations of synergistic asceticism—the lifelong cooperation of human will with divine grace. Chrysostom also draws theological significance from the seemingly mundane request for 'parchments' (v. 13), arguing that if an Apostle who spoke by the Holy Spirit still required the written Scriptures, subsequent generations must rigorously depend on the physical texts of Holy Tradition. Furthermore, Paul's refusal to condemn those who abandoned him at his defense (v. 16) is upheld by the Fathers as the pinnacle of Christ-like forgiveness.

Oriental Orthodox

The text presents Paul's final, solemn testamentary charge to Timothy. Written from prison with the expectation of imminent execution, Paul commands Timothy to maintain doctrinal purity and pastoral diligence in the face of coming apostasy, where people will seek teachers to suit their own desires. Paul reflects on his own completed ministry, describing his life as a sacrificial libation and expressing absolute confidence in the eschatological reward of the 'crown of righteousness.' The chapter concludes with personal instructions, requests for specific companions and items, and reflections on those who abandoned him versus the Lord who faithfully delivered and sustained him. Reception: Oriental Orthodox reception of this chapter focuses heavily on its ascetic, martyrological, and ecclesiological dimensions. For the Coptic Orthodox Church, verse 11 ('Take Mark... for he is useful to me') is of paramount importance. It serves as a canonical vindication of St. Mark the Evangelist, demonstrating his reconciliation with Paul and affirming the supreme apostolic dignity of the founder of the See of Alexandria. The language of being 'poured out' and fighting the 'good fight' (verses 6-7) was deeply absorbed into the miaphysite ascetic tradition. Fathers like Athanasius of Alexandria utilized this Pauline vocabulary to seamlessly transition from the era of blood martyrdom to the 'white martyrdom' of monasticism, framing the desert ascetic's life as the fulfillment of Paul's enduring race. Furthermore, the warning against teachers who appeal to 'itching ears' and turn people to 'fables' (verses 3-4) became a standard rhetorical device in Syriac and Coptic polemics to condemn those who deviated from the Christology of Cyril of Alexandria and the first three Ecumenical Councils.

1I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. 6For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 9Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: 10For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. 11Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. 12And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. 13The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. 14Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: 15Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words. 16At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. 17Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 18And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 19Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. 20Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick. 21Do thy diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren. 22The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen. The second epistle unto Timotheus, ordained the first bishop of the church of the Ephesians, was written from Rome, when Paul was brought before Nero the second time.

Academic textual-historical analysis

Academic analysis identifies 2 Timothy 4 as belonging to the genre of a 'farewell discourse' or testamentary literature. Common in both Jewish (e.g., Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs) and Greco-Roman traditions, this form features a dying leader issuing final instructions, predicting future decline, and reflecting on their life. The author constructs Paul's valedictory by merging solemn eschatological mandates (4:1-5) with cultic ('poured out', spendomai) and agonistic (athletic/military) metaphors (4:6-8) typical of Greco-Roman moral philosophy. The chapter then shifts abruptly from elevated rhetoric to highly granular personal travelogues, grievances, and logistical requests (4:9-22), situating the speaker in a concrete Roman judicial context awaiting execution.

Jewish interpretation

In its immediate historical context, this chapter functions as a testamentary farewell discourse, a genre well known in Second Temple Jewish literature (e.g., the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs). The author, facing imminent death, charges his successor (verses 1-5), reflects on his own completed life using athletic and sacrificial metaphors (verses 6-8), and provides specific instructions regarding associates, opponents, and personal items like books and parchments (verses 9-22).

Latter-day Saint

In its immediate epistolary context, Paul delivers his final, solemn charge to Timothy. Anticipating his own execution, Paul commands Timothy to preach the word tirelessly and to fulfill his ministry. Paul prophesies an approaching era where people will reject sound teaching in favor of false teachers who satisfy their own desires. Concluding, Paul reflects on his completed mortal ministry, confident in the 'crown of righteousness' the Lord will award him and all faithful believers.

Jehovah's Witnesses

In his final canonical letter, Paul faces imminent execution and issues a solemn charge to Timothy. He commands Timothy to preach the word urgently, warning that a time is coming when people will reject sound teaching in favor of fables that tickle their ears. Paul reflects on his own completed ministry and the heavenly reward awaiting him, updates Timothy on the status of his companions, warns of opposers like Alexander the coppersmith, and expresses confidence in divine deliverance and judgment.

  • v8: the crown of righteousness — Preserves the definite article pattern and deliberately refuses to resolve the dispute over whether final salvation is a grace or a merited, contingent reward.
  • v8: righteous — Maintains the source-language cognate relationship with 'righteousness'.
  • v9: Be diligent to come — Standard rendering of the command that establishes the exact repetition used in verse 21.

  • v13: left behind — Translates the compound verb and sets up the lexical repetition for verse 20.

  • v14: works — Preserves the lexical repetition of ergon from verses 5 and 18.

  • v18: save — Translates sozo directly, avoiding full resolution of the theological dispute regarding whether preservation in the heavenly kingdom is unconditional or synergistic.
  • v18: into his heavenly kingdom — Standard English syntax that flattens the Greek double-article pattern, while explicitly preserving the inclusio with verse 1.
  • v19: Greet — Uses a genuinely contemporary register and establishes the repetition for the cognate greeting in verse 21.
  • v20: left behind — Preserves the exact lexical repetition of the compound verb from verse 13.
  • v21: Be diligent to come — Preserves the exact source-language repetition of the identical phrase from verse 9.

  • v22: spirit — Follows general convention for indicating the human spirit of the addressee.

  • This is AI-generated and source-grounded, and it is approved by no community that holds these traditions.
  • The readings were produced in isolated calls that do not see one another. Isolation prevents anchoring; it does not make them independent witnesses.
  • The Nicene-Trinitarian boundary, and the decision not to seat non-denominational Evangelicalism separately (it is a cross-traditional movement already present within several voting profiles), are editorial choices.
  • The roster, the grouping into three families, and the rule that families (not seat counts) carry consensus all shape the result. A different roster would produce a different synthesis.
  • One profile cannot exhaust a tradition; the synthesis reflects what the profiles said, not everything the traditions hold.
  • The non-voting panels (Academic, Jewish) never vote; LDS and Jehovah's Witness readings are a comparative appendix only.
  • Any profiles excluded for this chapter after failing the audit are named on the page and removed from the eligible roster for it.
  • The rendering is unreviewed by any tradition, and every contested wording it settled is listed in Choices Made — where the text forced a decision, the decision is documented rather than hidden behind a claim of preserved ambiguity.
