1I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called, 2with perfect lowliness and peaceableness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you also were called in one hope of your calling; 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6one God and Father of all, the one over all and through all and in all of you. 7But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ. 8Therefore he says: "Having ascended on high, he led captive captivity, and gave gifts to humanity." 9Now this, "He ascended," what is it except that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10The one having descended is himself also the one having ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things. 11And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12toward the equipping of the saints, for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ, 13until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full-grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, in human conning, in cunning toward the scheming of deceit, 15but truthing in love, we may grow up in all things into him who is the head, Christ, 16from whom the whole body, being fitted and fastened together through every joint of supply, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the increase of the body to the building up of itself in love. 17Therefore I say this, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk just as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their heart; 19who, having cast off all feeling, gave themselves up to sensuality, to the practice of all impurity with insatiability. 20But you did not learn the Christ in this way, 21if indeed you heard him and were taught in him, just as truth is in the Jesus: 22that you put off, concerning your former way of life, the old man that grows corrupt according to the desires of deceit, 23and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24and put on the new man, the one created according to God in righteousness and holiness of truth. 25Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth, each one with his neighbor, because we are members of one another. 26Be angry, and do not sin; let not the sun go down on your wrath, 27and do not give place to the devil. 28The one stealing, let him steal no more, but rather let him labor, working what is good with his own hands, so that he may have something to impart to the one having need. 29Let no corrupt word proceed out of the mouth of you all, but only what is good for building up as the need may be, so that it may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. 32And become kind to one another, tenderhearted, showing grace to one another, just as God also in Christ showed grace to you.

Christians broadly agree that putting off the old man and putting on the new man mandates the continuous, lifelong mortification of sin rather than merely a one-time conversion event. However, the implications of the "one baptism" and church unity are heavily disputed, including whether the text establishes visible sacramental boundaries, and whether a subsequent, empowering baptism in the Holy Spirit remains scriptural or is an unscriptural expectation. Significant disputes also emerge… Ingia ili usome makubaliano kamili →

Catholic

Paul urges the believers in Ephesus to walk worthy of their calling by preserving the unity of the Spirit. He explains that the ascended Christ has distributed diverse gifts and offices to build up a single, mature body. Moving from ecclesial unity to personal morality, the author contrasts the ignorance and corruption of the Gentile world with the new life in Christ, commanding the believers to put off their old nature, be renewed in mind, and put on the new man, resulting in ethical behavior characterized by truthfulness, honest labor, pure speech, and mutual forgiveness. Reception: The Catholic tradition reads this chapter as a primary locus for ecclesiology, sacramental theology, and justification. Verses 4-6 form the dogmatic core of Catholic unity; Vatican II's 'Unitatis Redintegratio' relies on 'one baptism' to articulate the foundational bond shared by all Christians, even amidst schism. The diverse offices in verses 11-12 are received by the Magisterium, notably in 'Lumen Gentium', as establishing the hierarchical and charismatic structure of the Church, particularly the teaching authority of pastors and apostles. Verse 9 ('descended into the lower parts') is dogmatically understood as Christ's descent to the dead. The Latin tradition, articulated by Thomas Aquinas in the 'Summa Theologica', systematically defines this as the descent to the Limbo of the Fathers to liberate the righteous, while Eastern Catholic churches, echoing Greek Fathers like John Chrysostom in his 'Homilies on Ephesians', emphasize the dramatic, victorious harrowing of Hades. Verses 22-24 ('put on the new man') are cited by the Council of Trent's 'Decree on Justification' to prove that justification is not a mere extrinsic imputation of righteousness, but an ontological, interior renewal. Finally, verse 30 ('sealed unto the day of redemption') is universally read as the scriptural basis for the sacramental 'character' or 'sphragis'—an indelible ontological mark conferred by Baptism, Confirmation or Chrismation, and Holy Orders.

Eastern Orthodox

The Apostle Paul transitions from the theological exposition of the first three chapters to practical exhortations, urging the Ephesians to live in a manner worthy of their calling. He grounds this ethical life in the organic unity of the Church, anchored in the oneness of God, the Spirit, and baptism. Paul explains that the ascended Christ—who first descended into the lower parts of the earth—distributes diverse ministerial gifts to equip the saints and build up His body toward full maturity. Consequently, believers are commanded to abandon the futile, darkened lifestyle of the Gentiles, to put off the corrupt 'old man,' and to put on the 'new man' through the renewal of their minds, resulting in concrete moral transformations in speech, anger, labor, and mutual forgiveness. Reception: Eastern Orthodoxy reads Ephesians 4 as a profound synthesis of Christology, ecclesiology, and ascetic anthropology. Verses 8-10, describing Christ descending into the 'lower parts of the earth' before ascending, are foundational for the Orthodox understanding of the Harrowing of Hell. John Chrysostom interprets this descent as Christ's victorious entrance into Hades to conquer death, demonstrating ultimate humility before His exaltation, which enables the distribution of divine gifts. John of Damascus further underscores that through this descent and ascent, Christ's deified humanity allows Him to 'fill all things' (v. 10). The exhortation to attain to a 'perfect man' and 'the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ' (v. 13) is received as the ultimate vocation of theosis (deification). Maximus the Confessor views this as the synergistic process by which the Church is organically united to Christ the Head. Furthermore, the injunction to be 'renewed in the spirit of your mind' (v. 23) revolves around the Greek term 'nous'. The patristic consensus understands the nous as the spiritual intellect or 'eye of the heart,' which must be purified from the passions of the 'old man' (vv. 17-19, 22) in order to participate in the life of God.

Oriental Orthodox

In this chapter, Paul shifts from theological exposition to practical exhortation, urging the Ephesians to live out their calling through ecclesial unity. He roots this unity in the profound oneness of God, the Spirit, and the Church, emphasizing that diverse spiritual gifts are bestowed by the ascended Christ for the maturation and building up of the body. He then commands a radical break from the futility and ignorance of their former pagan lives, instructing them to strip off the 'old man' corrupted by deceitful desires, to be renewed in their minds, and to clothe themselves in the 'new man' created in divine righteousness. The chapter concludes with specific ethical directives regarding speech, anger, labor, and forgiveness, warning against grieving the Holy Spirit. Reception: The Oriental Orthodox tradition reads this chapter profoundly through its miaphysite (one incarnate nature) Christological lens and its rigorous ascetic heritage. Verse 5 ('one Lord, one faith, one baptism') is a paramount prooftext in the tradition's defense of the indivisible unity of Christ. Cyril of Alexandria and later anti-Chalcedonian theologians argue that just as the Church's faith and baptism cannot be divided into two, the 'one Lord' cannot be divided into two separate natures after the union. The unity of the Church is intrinsically tied to the unity of the incarnate Word. Furthermore, the descent into the 'lower parts of the earth' (verses 8-10) is universally received as Christ's victorious descent into Hades. The tradition maintains that even in death, Christ's divinity remained united to His soul, allowing Him to shatter the underworld and lead captivity captive. The Syriac and Coptic monastic traditions, represented by figures like Philoxenus of Mabbug, concentrate heavily on verses 22-24. 'Putting off the old man' and 'putting on the new man' is not viewed merely as a one-time conversion event, but as the continuous, grueling ascetic labor of the monk to purify the 'spirit of the mind' and attain the likeness of God through unceasing vigilance.

KJV · King James Version

1I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 7But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. 8Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. 9(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. 17This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20But ye have not so learned Christ; 21If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 25Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. 26Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27Neither give place to the devil. 28Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. 29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Academic textual-historical analysis

In academic textual-historical analysis, Ephesians 4 marks the rhetorical pivot of the letter from theological indicative to ethical imperative (paraenesis). Critical scholarship broadly situates this text within a Deutero-Pauline context (c. 80-100 CE), reflecting a period of institutional consolidation and a concern for universal church unity. The author anchors ecclesial unity (4:1-6) in early Christian creedal formulations ('one Lord, one faith, one baptism'). A primary focus of philological and textual study in this chapter is 4:8, where the author quotes Psalm 68:18. Where the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint say the triumphant figure 'received gifts among men,' Ephesians alters the verb to 'gave gifts to men' (ἔδωκεν δόματα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις). Scholars interpret this either as a reliance on a variant textual tradition (paralleling the later Aramaic Targum on the Psalms) or a deliberate christological midrash depicting the ascended Christ distributing the spoils of cosmic victory in the form of church offices (4:11). The phrase 'descended into the lower parts of the earth' (τὰ κατώτερα τῆς γῆς, 4:9) reflects an ancient three-tiered cosmology. Exegetes debate whether the genitive is partitive (a descent into Hades or the grave) or epexegetical (a descent to the lower regions, namely, the earth, signifying the incarnation). The list of ministries (4:11) demonstrates a structured ecclesiology, designed to stabilize the community against heterodox 'winds of doctrine' (4:14). The chapter concludes with Hellenistic Jewish 'two ways' ethical instruction, contrasting the 'old man' (associated with Greco-Roman vices) with the 'new man' (4:17-32).

Jewish interpretation

From a historical Jewish perspective, Ephesians 4 is a late first-century Christian exhortation directed at Gentile adherents, utilizing traditional Jewish ethical frameworks to promote communal unity. Modern Jewish scholars observe that the chapter relies heavily on Second Temple Jewish moral paradigms to contrast righteous behavior with stereotypical Gentile vices. The author repurposes Hebrew Scripture to establish a new sectarian identity centered on a Christological framework rather than the Torah.

Latter-day Saint

In this epistle, the author exhorts the Ephesian Christians to maintain unity, grounded in their shared faith, baptism, and worship of one God. He explains that the ascended Christ has endowed the church with specific leadership roles—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—to mature the believers, equip them for ministry, and protect them from doctrinal deception. Consequently, believers are urged to abandon their former corrupt Gentile behaviors, put on a 'new man' created in righteousness, and live in truth, wholesome speech, and mutual forgiveness.

Jehovah's Witnesses

In this chapter, the author urgently appeals to the Ephesian believers to maintain unity and peace. He outlines the shared foundations of their calling, noting the diverse leadership roles Christ provided to build up the community toward maturity and doctrinal stability. The text then transitions to a stark ethical contrast, commanding the readers to abandon their former, corrupt Gentile behavior, to undergo a fundamental mental renewal, and to adopt a new, righteous way of living characterized by truthfulness, honest labor, wholesome speech, and forgiveness.

  • v1: "urge you to walk" — Accurately reflects the infinitive construction of the Greek parakalō.
  • v1: "in the Lord" — Translates the preposition en accurately based on the source text.
  • v2: "perfect lowliness and peaceableness" — Preserves the alliterative p-sounds of the Greek pasēs, tapeinophrosynēs, and prautētos.
  • v3: "unity of the Spirit" — Capitalizes Spirit to denote the Holy Spirit as the agent of unity, a concept disputed among traditions regarding whether this embraces secondary diversity within an organic bond of peace.
  • v5: "Lord" — Translates the divine title Kyrios, following the divine name map.
  • v5: "one baptism" — Lowercase preserves the plain Greek noun, though it is disputed among traditions whether this establishes visible sacramental boundaries, refers exclusively to believers' immersion, or is distinct from an empowering baptism in the Spirit.
  • v6: "over all" — Renders the preposition epi accurately indicating position or authority based on the source text.
  • v6: "God" — Translates the divine name Theos, following the divine name map.
  • v8: "to humanity" — Captures the collective scope of anthropois in this christological midrash based on academic historical reading.
  • v9: "lower parts of the earth" — A literal partitive rendering reflects the spatial cosmology of the Greek, an expression disputed among traditions regarding whether this refers to a descent to Hades to liberate the dead or exclusively to the incarnation and grave.
  • v11: "the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers" — Preserves the definite groupings of ministries matching the Greek article pattern, a structure disputed among traditions over whether these offices establish hierarchical authority, remain active, or have ceased after the foundational age.
  • v12: "toward the equipping of the saints, for the work of ministry" — Clarifies the syntactic sequence of purpose, an arrangement disputed among traditions regarding whether the primary purpose is equipping the laity or reserving functions for a separate clergy class.
  • v13: "to a full-grown man" — Accurately renders teleion as maturity, though it is disputed among traditions whether reaching this measure of the stature of Christ describes entire sanctification in this life.
  • v14: "in human conning, in cunning" — Replicates the aural assonance of kybeia and panourgia in the Greek text.
  • v15: "truthing" — Preserves the unique verbal form aletheuontes as a single continuous action.
  • v16: "fitted and fastened together" — Captures the alliterative syn- prefixed compound verbs with corresponding English f-sounds.
  • v19: "all impurity with insatiability" — Preserves the rhythmic assonance of the Greek phrase akatharsias pasēs en pleonexia.
  • v20: "the Christ" — Retains the definite article ton before Christon as found in the Greek text.
  • v21: "the Jesus" — Preserves the definite article tō before Iēsou based on the source text.
  • v22: "the old man" — Preserves the literal anthrōpon, an expression aligning with a broad reception that putting off the old man mandates the continuous, lifelong mortification of sin.
  • v25: "putting away falsehood, speak truth" — Directly translates the ethical imperative, an instruction disputed among traditions as several operationalize these instructions as formal standards for congregational discipline.
  • v28: "The one stealing, let him steal no more" — Accurately translates the present participle ho kleptōn functioning as a substantive alongside the singular imperative.
  • v29: "mouth of you all" — Makes explicit the plural pronoun hymōn in contrast with the preceding singular subjects.
  • v30: "by whom you were sealed" — Recognizes the personal agency of the Spirit, a phrasing disputed among traditions over whether this sealing guarantees eternal security or if the warning not to grieve the Spirit indicates grace is resistible.
  • v32: "showing grace to one another... showed grace to you" — Consistently translates the cognate forms of charizomai to highlight the root concept of grace in the source language.

  • This is AI-generated and source-grounded, and it is approved by no community that holds these traditions.
  • The readings were produced in isolated calls that do not see one another. Isolation prevents anchoring; it does not make them independent witnesses.
  • The Nicene-Trinitarian boundary, and the decision not to seat non-denominational Evangelicalism separately (it is a cross-traditional movement already present within several voting profiles), are editorial choices.
  • The roster, the grouping into three families, and the rule that families (not seat counts) carry consensus all shape the result. A different roster would produce a different synthesis.
  • One profile cannot exhaust a tradition; the synthesis reflects what the profiles said, not everything the traditions hold.
  • The non-voting panels (Academic, Jewish) never vote; LDS and Jehovah's Witness readings are a comparative appendix only.
  • Any profiles excluded for this chapter after failing the audit are named on the page and removed from the eligible roster for it.
  • The rendering is unreviewed by any tradition, and every contested wording it settled is listed in Choices Made — where the text forced a decision, the decision is documented rather than hidden behind a claim of preserved ambiguity.
