1Therefore, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, the dead man whom Jesus had raised from among the dead. 2So they made a supper for him there, and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him. 3Then Mary, having taken a litra of very precious ointment of pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. 4But Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, one of his disciples, the one who was about to betray him, said, 5"Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" 6Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money box, he used to steal what was put into it. 7Jesus therefore said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. 8For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me." 9Therefore a large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there, and they came, not because of Jesus only, but so that they might also see Lazarus, whom he had raised from among the dead. 10But the chief priests conspired so that they might put Lazarus to death also, 11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. 12On the next day, the large crowd that had come to the feast, having heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and were crying out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!" 14And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it; just as it is written: 15"Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion; look, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt." 16His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and that they had done these things to him. 17Therefore the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from among the dead continued to bear witness. 18Because of this the crowd also went to meet him, because they heard that he had done this sign. 19The Pharisees therefore said to one another, "You see that you are profiting nothing; look, the whole world has gone after him." 20Now there were some Greeks among those going up so that they might worship at the feast. 21Therefore these came to Philip, the one from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, "Sir, we want to see Jesus." 22Philip comes and tells Andrew; and again, Andrew and Philip come and tell Jesus. 23But Jesus answers them, saying, "The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat, having fallen into the earth, dies, it remains by itself alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25The one who loves his life loses it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. 27"Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But on account of this I came to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name." A voice therefore came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." 29Therefore the crowd, the one standing and hearing it, was saying that it had thundered. Others were saying, "An angel has spoken to him." 30Jesus answered and said, "Not on account of me has this voice come, but on account of you. 31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." 33Now he was saying this, signifying by what death he was about to die. 34The crowd therefore answered him, "We heard out of the law that the Christ remains forever; and how do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?" 35Jesus therefore said to them, "Yet a little time the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness may not overtake you; and the one walking in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light." Jesus spoke these things, and having gone away, he was hidden from them. 37But though he had done so many signs before them, they were not believing in him, 38so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: "Lord, who has believed our report? And the arm of the Lord, to whom was it revealed?" 39On account of this they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: 40"He has blinded their eyes and he hardened their heart, so that they might not see with the eyes, and perceive with the heart, and turn, and I would heal them." 41Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke about him. 42Nevertheless, even out of the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing it, so that they might not be put out of the synagogue; 43for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God. 44But Jesus cried out and said, "The one believing in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me; 45and the one beholding me beholds the one who sent me. 46I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone believing in me may not remain in the darkness. 47And if anyone hears my sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come so that I might judge the world, but so that I might save the world. 48The one rejecting me and not receiving my sayings has one judging him; the word that I spoke, that will judge him on the last day. 49Because I did not speak from myself, but the Father who sent me, he has given me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak. 50And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore the things which I speak, just as the Father has said to me, so I speak."
