1but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2And early in the morning he came again to the temple, and all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and placing her in the middle, 4they told him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do you say?” 6They said this to test him, that they might have a charge to bring against him. But Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger, ignoring them. 7When they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the sinless one among you be the first to throw the stone at her.” 8And bending down again, he wrote on the ground. 9When they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, they went out one by one, beginning from the elders to the last, and Jesus was left alone, with the woman standing in the middle. 10Jesus straightened up, and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?” 11She said, “No one, Lord.” Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on, sin no more.” 12Therefore Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13Therefore the Pharisees said to him, “You testify about yourself; your testimony is not valid.” 14Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16And even if I do judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me. 17And in your law it is written that the testimony of two people is valid. 18I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.” 19Therefore they said to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. 21Therefore Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22Therefore the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23And he said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are from this world; I am not from this world. 24Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.” 25Therefore they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been speaking to you from the beginning. 26I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but the one who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I speak to the world.” 27They did not understand that he was speaking to them of the Father. 28Therefore Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am, and that I do nothing from myself, but as my Father taught me, I speak these things. 29And the one who sent me is with me. The Father has not left me alone, because I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” 30As he was speaking these things, many believed in him. 31Therefore Jesus said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” 34Jesus answered them, “Amen, amen, I tell you, everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin. 35And the slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36Therefore if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37I know that you are Abraham’s offspring; yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you. 38I speak the things which I have seen with my Father; and you therefore do the things which you heard from your father.” 39They answered and said to him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus says to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40But now you seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41You do the works of your father.” Therefore they said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality; we have one Father, God.” 42Therefore Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God; for neither have I come from myself, but he sent me. 43Why do you not understand my speech? Because you are not able to hear my word. 44You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks out of his own character, because he is a liar and the father of it. 45But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. 46Which of you convicts me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe me? 47The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.” 48Therefore the Jews answered and said to him, “Do we not say well that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” 49Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50But I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it, and judges. 51Amen, amen, I tell you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” 52Therefore the Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets, and you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste of death.’ 53Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?” 54Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God. 55Yet you have not known him, but I know him. And if I say that I do not know him, I will be a liar like you; but I do know him, and I keep his word. 56Your father Abraham was glad that he might see my day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57Therefore the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am.” 59Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, passing right through their midst, and so passed by.
